British Army successfully tests weapon that takes down over 100 drones with radio wave (X @DefenceHQ)
British soldiers successfully tested a new radio frequency weapon in Wales, managing to take down more than 100 drones during the largest tests of this type ever conducted by the UK Army.
The technology, called RF DEW (Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon), uses invisible waves to disable the electronic systems of drones, capable of neutralizing multiple threats simultaneously at a low cost, about 10 cents per shot.
Developed by a consortium led by Thales UK in partnership with UK defense agencies, the system received more than $53 million in investment from the government and creates jobs in Northern Ireland and the southeast of England. The weapon has the potential to integrate into the UK’s layered air defense, offering a more cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional missiles, with a range of up to one kilometer and the ability to act against resilient drones.
The tests are taking place amid the growing threat of drone swarms in modern conflicts, such as in the war in Ukraine, where more than 18,000 drones were used in attacks last year. The success of the RF DEW represents an important step in the modernization of British defense and highlights the role of industry and national innovation in strengthening the country’s security.
